Stephanie Baker
TEACHING ARTIST
Stephanie Baker was born in the rural watershed of the Chesapeake Bay. In 2008 she graduated from the Savannah College of Art & Design with a BFA in painting and currently lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland. Her work is often richly colored, and includes an array of content from abstract light refractions to embellished singular items that represent complex life occurrences. She has been involved in a broad range of projects from studio art and design to commercial construction. Past work includes the American Visionary Art Museum’s mosaic exterior and public murals in Baltimore, Annapolis, Maryland, and Washington, DC. She is currently expanding each of her painting series, while continuing to experiment with alternative media and small-group teaching workshops. She has worked with youth held in juvenile detention, teaching skills in tile work, the art of mosaics, and workshops for environmental guides of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, helping to introduce art into their youth and young adult summer camps.
Teaching philosophy: “One of the greatest joys I've experienced through teaching is to give people of all ages confidence through finding their creativity. So many people argue that they are ‘bad at art’ and it's my job to encourage an alternative way of seeing things, so that they can find excitement and stamina to pursue their projects and appreciate their own creativity. Making mistakes repeatedly as a means of experimentation helps break down the barrier and gain comfort, learn about materials, color, composition etc.”
