John Lewis Mural Project

John Lewis Mural Project – Future History Now

November 3-7, 2020
95 West Street, Annapolis, MD

This mural features John Lewis, an American politician and Civil Rights leader. Behind his portrait is a depiction of the iconic scene of key activists leading the Selma to Montgomery marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965, which shows Lewis as the central figure (second from far left) and Martin Luther King Jr.

Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., Lewis joined the burgeoning civil rights movement. Lewis was a Freedom Rider, chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), spoke at 1963’s March on Washington, and led the demonstration that became known as “Bloody Sunday.” He was elected to Congress in 1986 and served 17 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Lewis received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 and continued fighting for people’s rights until his death in 2020.

This project featured a team of 15- to 21-year-old local youth guided by FHN Teaching Artists.

This mural was made possible by generous donations from:
Art in Public Places Commission, the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, Carroll H. Hynson Foundation Fund, 41 generous individuals, with additional support from the City of Annapolis, Annapolis Recreation and Parks, West Street 7-Eleven, and Pepsi Beverages Company.
