Equal Justice Mural Project
April 9-12, 2021
156 South Street, Annapolis, MD
Equal Justice Mural Project is the sixth completed mural installation in the KMH Mural Tour series.
This mural honors two late Supreme Court justices: Thurgood Marshall and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It is located directly across from the Anne Arundel County Courthouse.
"We believe the two Supreme Court justices embody the concept of equal justice under law, even as our judicial system sometimes falls short of this ideal," said FHN co-founder Julia Gibb.
As a lifelong Marylander, Marshall fought for school integration. President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Marshall to the Supreme Court in 1967, making him the first Black justice. Marshall, who is also the namesake of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, died in 1993. He was 84.
Ginsburg was a feminist who fought for gender equality and was the only Supreme Court Justice since Thurgood Marshall to effectively make a difference using Equal Justice Under Law principles. President Bill Clinton appointed her to the high court in 1993. She served until her death in 2020. She was 87.
This project featured a team of 15- to 21-year-old local youth guided by FHN Teaching Artists.
This mural was funded by the Art in Public Places Commission and Pepsi Beverages Company. Additional support was given by the City of Annapolis, Cohen & Greene, P.A., and Regal Paint Centers.
